Kaizer Chiefs head coach Arthur Zwane has revealed he wanted give young striker Wandile Duba a rare outing against Chippa United, but insisted the tight scoreline didn’t allow him to throw the youngster into the deep end.
Duba, 18, has made four appearances off the bench in 2023 after he was added to Amakhosi’s senior squad during the break for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
But, while Samkelo Zwane and Mduduzi Shabalala have been constant figures in Arthur Zwane’s side this year, Duba has seen game-time come hard done by.
Zwane confirmed he had planned to give Duba minutes at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, but insisted the 1-0 win was too tight to experiment.
“We’re always looking to give our youngsters an opportunity, even today I wanted to throw him in, unfortunately, I couldn’t throw him in [at that stage of the game],” Zwane said when asked about Duba
“I wanted us to get a second goal, kill the game off and then give the youngsters to go out and express themselves.
“We’re desperate for points, so there’s no time to gamble or experiment and I think whenever the opportunity arises, we will give them the opportunity, but we’ll see in terms of how we profile Swallows.”
Chiefs return to action on Monday, when they will face Swallows in a Soweto Derby at Peter Mohaba Stadium.
