Champions Wydad Athletic Club advanced to the last-four of the CAF Champions League after a penalty shoot-out victory over Simba SC at the Stade Mohamed V on Friday evening.
After the 1-0 defeat at the Benjamin Mkapa last week thanks to Jean Baleke’s solitary strike, Wydad started the game with their back against the wall.
And the Stade Mohamed V brought a hostile atmosphere for the Tanzanian giants from the first whistle to the last.
When Senegalese striker Bouly Junior Sambou opened the scoring just before the half-hour mark it seemed as the writing was on the wall for the visitors, but what ensued was a rather uninspiring affair as neither side were able to take control of the game in Casablanca.
The second half didn’t proved much of an improvement as the visitors led by Brazilain coach Robertinho looked to contain the Botola Pro giants, which they did effectively while offering very little going forward.
And they managed to drag the tie all the way to penalties with the 1-1 aggregate scoreline but the home side managed to win the shoot-out 4-3 as Youssef El Motie saved two spot-kicks on the night.
Wydad now book their place in the semi-final where they are likely to meet Mamelodi Sundowns, should they finish off the job against CR Belouizdad on Saturday afternoon.
