Mamelodi Sundowns winger Gaston Sirino has revealed that he wants to win CAF Champions League and make the club a powerhouse in Africa.

The Uruguayan international arrived in South Africa five years ago after he was signed from Bolivar FC.

Since then the 32-year-old has won every trophy on offer domestically, including six Premier Soccer League titles.

But Sirino is missing the prestigious CAF Champions League trophy in his cabinet.

“The standard of football in Africa has gradually improved since I moved here, and the number of African players signed to European clubs has increased,” Sirino told Sundowns magazine.

“At the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, an African team made history by going all the way to the semi-finals for the first time.

“There are also teams that we play against in the CAF Champions League that are doing really well. For example, Al Ahly beat Flamengo from Brazil and went on to play Real Madrid at the FIFA Club World Cup earlier this year.

“We are also doing well domestically, but I want to win the Champions League, get the second star, and ensure that Mamelodi Sundowns becomes a powerhouse in African football.”

In the past four seasons, he witnessed Downs being knocked out in the quarter-finals on three occasions – twice by Egyptian giants Al Ahly and once by Angolan side Petro de Luanda.

In his first season in South Africa, Sundowns got knocked out by Wydad Athletic Club in the semi-final, the closest he has gone.
