Former Chippa United head coach Daine Klate has revealed that he only received an official email about his sacking three months after he was dismissed by the club.
Klate, 38, had his first stint as head coach with the Chilli Boys after replacing Kurt Lentjies before the start of the 2022/23 campaign.
However, his reign only lasted seven games, of which he won one against his former club Orlando Pirates, while losing four and drawing two.
He was replaced by Morgan Mammila on the sidelines after just seven games, as first reported by iDiski Times at the time, with the latter lasting until the end of February, when he was replaced by Lentjies, as the Eastern Cape club went full circle.
Klate had been off the radar for a while after his surprise sacking by the club, but was recently introduced as one of the new Nedbank Cup ambassadors.
He now told Lorenz Kohler in an exclusive interview in edition 97 of the newspaper (which can be found on our website), that he only received an official confirmation from the club three months after leaving.
“Ja, it’s a bit of chaos. But it’s a chaos that I knew. Like I always said, I didn’t go in there blindly, I went in there weary,” he told iDiski Times.
“But ja, I only got the email of confirmation of the club is not going to go on with me in December, when they wanted me to come back and coach the Diski team, and I had certain things that I wanted in place. And we couldn’t come to an agreement or anything.
“There was no contract, to be honest with you. There was no contract, to be honest with you.
“I never signed the contract because I believe that I’m there purely to learn and not for my gain, not for my financial gain, because it’s not a club that you can go to for that, it’s not the ultimate job, I would say.”
When asked whether he was only appointed on a handshake and no written contract, Klate explained: “There was a contract that was given to me, but I wasn’t satisfied with what the contents of the contract were. So we just go with the flow.”
