Rhodes University conferred Chief Justice Raymond Zondo with an honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD) degree at a graduation ceremony on Wednesday, 29 March.
Rhodes University’s recognition of Zondo’s distinguished career and service to the public and society
Zondo, who was appointed the Chief Justice of South Africa on 1 April, is being honoured by the Eastern Cape university for his contribution to jurisprudence in the country.
Perhaps Zondo’s biggest claim to fame is his handling of the Commission of Inquiry into allegations of State Capture, Corruption and Fraud in the public sector and organs of the State. Former President Jacob Zuma appointed him as the Chairperson of the State Capture Commission in January 2018.
The Commission submitted a six-part report to sitting President Cyril Ramaphosa, which detailed a number of recommendations to tackle corruption in South Africa.
Role in the State Capture Inquiry
“His role as the Chairperson of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of State Capture will always stand as a monument to exemplary leadership, courage, dedication, and selfless service to our nation. Our nation owes him an inestimable debt of gratitude and appreciation for dedicating his life to public service and the betterment of humanity,” said Rhodes University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sizwe Mabizela.
Zondo said, “To have Rhodes University award me the degree of LLD (honoris causa) in recognition of what it believes is ‘my distinguished career’ and ‘outstanding service to the public and society’ is a great privilege. Rhodes University is a university of great standing, and I regard it as an honour that it has decided to confer such a degree on me.”
The Chief Justice studied Bjuris at the University of Zululand and obtained his LLB from the University of Natal. He has three LLM degrees from UNISA.
