Pitso – PSL Players Don’t Know Their Worth

Three-time CAF Champions League winning coach Pitso Mosimane says South African footballers don’t know their worth.

Mosimane left South Africa in September 2020 after winning 13 trophies for SuperSport United and Mamelodi Sundowns respectively, which included five league titles and the CAF Champions League with Masandawana.

He’s since lifted two more CAF Champions League titles, the Egypt Cup and back to back bronze medals at the FIFA Club World Cup with Al Ahly before resigning and moving on to the second-tier of Saudi Arabia with Al Ahli.

But when discussing the challenges of the decline of Bafana Bafana competing for trophies he stated our best talents need to leave the Premier Soccer League in order to take their game to the next level.

“When it comes to our football, there’s a lot that needs to change and also players must get the education of what is happening outside and what is happening here at home,” Mosimane said at the Nedbank Cup event at Konka on Thursday.

“Some of the things I know and see, and I can’t say a lot because it’s controversial and I will be in trouble with the football people you know. So South African players don’t know how good they are and they don’t know what they are worth.

“They are worth more, even coaches, and maybe I speak from a different position now because I also didn’t know… that a South African coach can contribute outside and be renumerated for the value of what you do.

“Sometimes I was told no, no, you can’t earn this money, there’s no money like this for you, there’s money! Hawu, are you asking for more? Then I found people who said no we’ll give you more than that.

“So it’s an eye opener and the players don’t know, if the players know that they can earn more and play in better competitions which will be good for Bafana Bafana also, it’s important, but South African players don’t know they can earn more and be millionaires.

“They are focused here, but I don’t blame them because there’s no information being passed to them or sometimes as Shabba says, sometimes we are told but we don’t listen, you know? So I’m the wrong guy to talk to, sometimes I look at some of the players and say wow this boy is such a good football player, does he know how much he can earn and change his family’s life?”
