Hunt Laments Lepasa Miss And Talks CAFCL Race

SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt says they will be ‘fine’ in the race for CAF Champions League football, while lamenting the chance Zakhele Lapasa missed in the 1-0 defeat against Orlando Pirates.

Tapelo Xoki’s late penalty left Hunt frustrated after the game, as Pirates and in fact Kaizer Chiefs moved within two points from second-placed Matsatsana.

And in the fixture at Orlando Stadium, the on loan Buccnaeer, Lepasa, who was named in the final 23-man Bafana Bafana squad spurned a big opportunity to give them the lead.

“We’re okay, we’ll be fine, we’ll be fine [about the two-point gap]. We played well, we’ll be okay. Lepasa’s miss, well, how many more do you want,” he said when asked about the race for second place.

“We’ve had lots of misses, lots of opportunities, and lots of balls across the box, but don’t score, so ya disappointed.

“That’s how football works, it is [based on] points and [games] played, nothing else. You can talk all day but I’m proud of the players.”

There’s been suggestions that Hunt has overachieved with his squad – that has been raided by Mamelodi Sundowns in recent years – and looked to be in a rebuilding phase with several inexperienced players making the bulk of the first-team squad when he arrived.

“We’ve done very well with the squad we’ve put together, you know, so there’s a lot of loans, frees, that type of thing,” he added.

“So we’ve done, you know… we’ve done very well I think in my opinion.”

SuperSport will now go into the FIFA International break before their next game on 1 April against Chippa United at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
