Richards Bay FC captain Siphamandla Mtolo has sadly passed away on Tuesday, iDiski Times has learnt.
Mtolo is said to have collapsed on the pitch when they were training on Tuesday morning, as they were back to training after the game against Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday.
“Yes, Mtolo is no more. He collapsed on the pitch when they were training today (Tuesday),” a source confirmed the tragic news to iDiski Times earlier on Tuesday.
The club has now confirmed the sad passing:
The 29-year-old featured in the full game against Chiefs, who won 1-0 at King Zwelithini Stadium, with the KwaZulu-Natal club dropping to sixth on the DStv Premiership table.
Mtolo missed the majority of the season due to a long-term injury, having captained them when they claimed the Motsepe Foundation Championship last campaign to be promoted in the big league in the DStv Premiership.
He recovered from the injury, entering the field in the second half when Bay beat Swallows 1-0 on 31 December. He was the starter when Bay hosted Mamelodi Sundowns in th following game, though his knee was heavily strapped.
He passed away having featured in eight league matches this season for Bay.
In all, having arrived from Uthongathi ahead of the 2020/21 season, where he spent three seasons, Mtolo featured in 155 matches.
We, at iDiski Times, would like to express our condolences to Mtolo’s family, friends, everyone at Richards Bay and the football fraternity as a whole.
