Al Hilal have moved ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns in their CAF Champions League group after beating Coton Sport 2-0 on Tuesday.
The Sudanese side, who had lost their group opener 1-0 Sundowns in South Africa on 11 February, have since collected three successive wins.
Today’s victory, thanks to goals by David Abagna (41′) and Makabi Lilepo (83′) was their second over Coton Sport, who remain on zero points and now have no chance of progressing from Group K, while Florent Ibrenge’s side also beat Al Ahly at home.
The 2-0 win sees Al Hilal climb to nine points from four games, while Masandawana sit on seven points from three matches.
Al Ahly follow with four points from three games after losing to Al Hilal in Sudan recently before collecting a point against Sundowns at home.
If Sundowns would beat Al Ahly in Saturday’s clash at Loftus Versfeld, they would move to 10 points and back on top of their group.
A win would also already secure a ticket for the knockout stages of the competition, because even if Al Ahly would still draw level on points with Downs in the final two match rounds, Rulani Mokwena’s side would be ahead based on the head-to-head record.
Meanwhile, a defeat to the CAFCL record champions, which would be Al Ahly’s first ever win on South African soil in their 14th attempt, would push the group wide open, with both Al Ahly and Downs on seven points and two behind Al Hilal with two games to spare.
