ZCC urges caution after past tragedies ahead of New Year gathering in Moria

The Zion Christian Church (ZCC) has urged members to observe road safety ahead of its 2025/26 New Year consecration conference in Moria, taking place from 3 to 10 September.
The church warned of high traffic volumes during the pilgrimage and advised families to supervise children and avoid travelling late at night.
This call comes after a tragic March 2024 bus accident that claimed over 40 lives en route to Moria.

Members of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) have been urged to prioritise road safety ahead of the church’s 2025/26 consecration of the New Year conference, which will take place from 3 to 10 September 2025.

Scores of congregants are expected to travel to Moria City for the annual gathering, which remains one of the most significant events on the church’s calendar.

In a statement, the church’s communications team emphasised that ensuring a safe and secure environment for worshippers is a top priority.

“During this conference, there is always high traffic volume and increased movement of people, including pedestrians and road users, around the church vicinity. We extend a heartfelt appeal to travellers journeying to and from Moria to adhere to road safety rules at all times. We also urge families to supervise young children and, where possible, avoid travelling during high-risk periods such as late at night,” the statement read.

The reminder comes as road accidents continue to claim lives during major religious gatherings.

In March 2024, tragedy struck when more than 40 congregants from Botswana lost their lives after a bus plunged off a bridge and caught fire en route to Moria.
