On loan AmaZulu goalkeeper Jody February has insisted that parent club Mamelodi Sundowns didn’t buy him for no reason, but for now he’s focussed on Usuthu.
February was signed by Sundowns in 2019 from Ajax Cape Town but has not played for the Tshwane giants yet as he was immediately loaned out to Cape United.
Last season, he was loaned out to Swallows FC and in January he joined AmaZulu. The competition at Downs was tough after they signed Ronwen William from SuperSport United ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, while Denis Onyango, Kennedy Mween and Reyard Pieterse were all seemingly ahead of him in the pecking order, too.
February is not the only one in that situation, as Downs have also loaned out Grant Magerman, Thabang Sibanyoni and Ricardo Goss to SuperSport United, for example.
The 26-year-old, though, insists that he can still have a future at Masandawana, even though he’s focussed on Usuthu for the rest of the campaign.
“Obviously they brought me for a reason,” said February when asked if he ever thought of cutting ties with Sundowns and venture his future elsewhere as chances look minimal for him to play.
“I’m not young but I’m not old. I’m sure they didn’t take me for no reason. But it is taking longer than you guys wanted to see. On my side I’m patient, I’m focused on AmaZulu now.
“If it comes that I have to go back to Sundowns at the end of the season, I’ll worry about that then.
“But for now I’m grateful to be here and who knows at the end of the season I’d stay here or I might go back to, you never know.”
When asked, if it frustrates him that he’s not part of Downs’ set up, February explained that getting upset wouldn’t help his cause.
“If I get angry that I’m not playing for them, it is not going to help me because at the end of the day they know what they are doing,” he replied.
“I think that question needs to be directed at them.”
