Tragic cause of young Stellenbosch’s player death

Hours after clinching a 2-1 victory against Chippa United, Stellenbosch released a statement to confirm that midfielder Oshwin Andries had tragically died on Saturday.

Andries made his first team debut this season against Orlando Pirates, while he captained the Diski team to the DStv Diski Challenge Championship last season. He was viewed as a highly talented and promising player, who had represented South Africa at youth level.

Andries allegedly succumbed to stab wounds in Cape Town on Saturday, and in an interview with Independent Media, his brother Lee-Irwin Andries emotionally revealed the tragic circumstances of his death.

“He was making a joke and that irked the suspect,” said Lee-Irwin. “He stabbed my brother from the side, repeatedly.”

Police spokesperson, captain Nowonga Sukwana, further explained that the circumstances of the fatal incident were now under investigation.

“He was treated for stab wounds and released and then his family took him to Paarl hospital. Circumstances around his stabbing, are still under investigation.”

Stellenbosch released the following statement:

It is with deep sadness that Stellenbosch F.C. has learned of the untimely passing of promising young defender, Oshwin Andries.

The Club is not in a position to provide further information at this stage and asks that his family’s privacy is respected in this difficult time of bereavement.

Andries was a gifted young footballer who graduated from the SFC Academy to make his professional debut at the age of 18.

He later became the Club’s youngest-ever goalscorer in the DStv Premiership and captained South Africa at the recent U-20 AFCON COSAFA qualifiers.

His presence, both on the pitch and off it, will be sorely missed. The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Stellenbosch F.C. are with his family, friends and loved ones.

A further statement will follow in due course.
