The police in Lichtenburg arrested 24 suspects in connection with public violence, looting and damaged to property.
SUSPECTS TORCH TRUCKS IN PUBLIC VIOLENCE
This arrest emanates from an incident in which suspects looted, torched two trucks, damaged property during public violence on Thursday, 19 January 2023.
Police Spokesperson Colonel Adéle Myburgh said 12 people aged between 21 and 32 were arrested and charged for Public Violence and Malicious Damage to Property.

“They appeared before the Lichtenburg Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 23 January 2023, and were remanded in custody until their next court appearance before the same court on Tuesday, 31 January 2023.”
THREE OF THE SUSPECTS ARRESTED PAID A GUILTY FINE
Myburgh said another 12 people, aged between 19 and 34, were arrested for the possession of stolen property and theft.
“The police confiscated more than 50 bags of cement and various steel poles.”

According to Myburgh, all suspects appeared in court. Three paid admission of guilt fines of R800, R400, and R1000, respectively.
“All remaining accused were remanded in custody and will appear before the same court on Tuesday, 31 January 2023.”

The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, condemned the public violence. He asked community members to raise their dissatisfaction peacefully and lawfully.
Kwena warned that those who transgressed the law would be traced and arrested.

in an unrelated incident, ten male suspects, four South Africans and six Zimbabwean nationals were rested for attempted murder and business robbery on Friday 27 January 2023.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) IIOC Undercover Reaction Unit together with the SAPS Crime Intelligence arrested the suspects for attempted murder, conspiracy to commit a business robbery, impersonating Department of Labour officials, contravention of the immigration act, fraud and possession of illegal firearms in Eikenhof, south of Johannesburg.
