Malawi’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) star, Chimwemwe Idana, has made a shock decision to dump the country’s multiple league champions, Nyasa Big Bullets.
Bullets have confirmed that they failed to agree terms with Chimwemwe Idana to have his contract extended at the Malawi powerhouse.
“Nyasa Big Bullets can confirm that Chimwemwe Idana has left the club with immediate effect after failing to agree on contract extension terms. His current deal ends on 21 February 2023,” the statement reads.
“Idana, who was our third captain, joined The People’s Team through our reserves in 2017 before earning his promotion to the first team in the 2018/19 season.”
The 24-year-old starred for the Flames at the delayed 2021 AFCON held in Cameroon between January and February last year.
HOW CHIMWEMWE IDANA LED BULLETS TO SILVERWARE
On the club level, Chimwemwe Idana spent six trophy-laden years with Bullets and won six TNM Super League titles.
Idana also led Bullets to two Charity Shields and the FDH Bank Cup.
The creative midfielder won the Player of the Season Award for the 2020/21 campaign.
Idana is the third player to leave Bullets this off-season in Malawi after winger Mischeck Selemani and striker Hassan Kajoke.
“Nyasa Big Bullets confirms that Misheck Seleman has left the club by mutual agreement, two months before the expiry of his contract, which is ending on 16 March 2023,” the Blantyre-based side says in another statement.
Kajoke and Selemani have since moved from Blantyre to Lilongwe where they have signed for Silver Strikers.
However, Bullets have complained over the manner in which Silver have signed the 2021 Golden Boot Award winner, Kajoke.
Bullets insist Kajoke is still contracted to Bullets until March 2023.
The Malawi league champions, who are coached by Zimbabwean Kalisto Pasuwa, had a successful 2022 season.
The People’s Team retained the domestic league title for a fourth consecutive time last November while also bagging the FDH Cup.
Bullets have won 16 unprecedented league titles, followed by Silver at eight and Mighty Mukuru Wanderers’ seven.
The only silverware Bullets failed to win in the year 2022 was the Airtel Top 8, which went to Wanderers after beating Bullets on post-match penalties.
