Black Coffee: “I Couldn’t Take Riky Rick’s Death I Blamed Myself”

Close friends and family gathered for a special tribute celebration of late hip-hop artist, Riky Rick. DJ Black Coffee was one of the speakers at the event.

The international DJ said that Riky Rick had reached out to him two months before he took his life. Black Coffee said the Sidlukotini hitmaker called him informing him that he was going through a difficult patch and needed someone to talk to.

He went on to say that he was surprised as the night before the call, Riky Rick was the life of the party. The DJ then asked the rapper to meet up but that day never came.

He then went on to blame himself for not trying harder, that time he was also going through a lot himself. Black Coffee believes that as an “OG” – as Riky affectionately called him – he should have been stronger.

The DJ reflected on a tweet he posted and deleted the night before the rapper took his own life. On 23 February 2022, the DJ took to his Twitter to write: “If at this point taking my life will make you happy, go ahead take it.”

Though he quickly deleted it, he, however, believes that the late rapper had seen it and lost hope then took his life in the early hours of 24 February 2022. He blamed himself for showing signs of vulnerability.

The international star also expressed that he wasn’t impressed that Riky Rick’s last words were published by various publications in the country. Black Coffee closed off his speech by saying the following words: “We need to just celebrate him continuously because God always restores. In his own words, ‘we don’t die, we multiply”.
