Sekhukhune United head coach Brandon Truter has suggested no team in the PSL can compete with Mamelodi Sundowns due to their spending power.
In the wake of several coaches waxing lyrical about the depth of the reigning champions and their eye-catching football under Rulani Mokwena, some have stated the have retained their title at the halfway mark of the 2022/23 season.
‘Brakkies’ agreed with the notion but feels it not due to the lack of quality of opposition coaches, but rather the gulf in financial muscle and playing squad strength at present.
“I saw it in the media, the remark [that Sundowns are champions] as well, Sundowns are far ahead of everybody, because of the quality they have,” Truter said.
“I think tactically, every coach in the country can compete tactically against Sundowns, but it’s down to the quality [of players], there’s no [Financial] Fair Play in the country and they can buy any quality they have.”
Masandawana have shown continuity in their coaching department over the past decade, while the same could not be said for the rest of the league during their Brazilians’ era of dominance of South African football.
And while Truter reiterated the quality is telling, he does feel with patience and the right project, Sundowns can be challenged for domestic honours.
“I think the rest of the clubs – if we don’t have the best talent, the best young talent, we are settling for, no disrespect… but average to good players, where Sundowns can go out and buy whatever they want and that’s where [Financial] Fair Play comes in.
“My bosses at Sekhuhkhune and I think the rest of the country doesn’t have the depth of the pockets Mr. Motsepe has.
“So I think tactically if you can compete with Sundowns, that shows you if you don’t have the money you can come up with a plan and coach a team that can compete with Sundowns.”
