SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt says the powers that be, in this case the PSL, should have handled the FIFA World Cup break better than it was.
However, Hunt didn’t say how or whether the PSL should have followed Egypt and other nations who did not stop their leagues after their nations did not qualify for the World Cup finals.
This after Hunt was asked how he would condition his players back to be where they were after he gave them a two weeks off due to the FIFA World Cup.
To have a World Cup in November and December in Qatar, it has never happened before to see the event hosted this time. But FIFA had no choice but to have it this time due to the expected heatwave in Qatar in June and July.
With the World Cup ending on Sunday where holders France will face Argentina in the final, the DStv Premiership will resume on 30 December, with Hunt’s SuperSport hosting Marumo Gallants at Lucas Moripe Stadium on the same day.
“This is a different scenario, this has never happened before,” said Hunt, whose side went for a mini-camp in Durban.
“Normally we would have played until 21 December and started again in the middle of January and sometimes in February because of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), but this is very different.
“Mentality has to be right because as you can see everyone is on holiday, with their families and friends. We had two weeks off, that was our Christmas, and we are fine.
“But this (FIFA break) could have been done differently. That is my opinion. But it is what it is.”
However, Hunt said he needed this camp to be in Durban because it is almost “impossible to train in one place for over a month”.
“You can’t train in one place for five weeks, you can’t – you will go mad,” said Hunt, whose side are third in the DStv Premiership table with 21 points after 12 games.
“I think most clubs will do something, go away and play a few games. Obviously it is all about the financial base.”
