President Cyril Ramaphosa has vehemently denied that nepotism was at play in the almost R400 million tenders awarded to his “nephew” Hangwani Morgan Maumela.
Ramaphosa was responding to questions by DA leader, John Steenhuisen in the National Assembly on Thursday, 03 November, and refuted claims he was in any way related to Maumela.
Steenhuisen said that the broad-based black economic empowerment (BBBEE) scheme is just a gateway for further corruption within the ANC and is not benefiting the people it was supposed to.
“The Zondo Commission showed us that BBBEE has been central to corruption in South Africa. Whether it is the R14 billion PPE corruption from Covid-19, or the billions that was stolen at Eskom.
A recent example, is one of your own nephew’s company scored R381 million from Gauteng hospitals. You are right, it does not benefit the majority, but it benefits ANC-connected cronies who make off with millions while the majority suffers.”
“You keep saying my nephew. I don’t even know this gentleman. So, let’s not even get there. I don’t know him.”
Ramaphosa denies Hangwani Morgan Maumela is related to him
However, according to reports by News24, Maumela is Ramaphosa’s nephew from a previous marriage.
Maumela is said to have benefitted from dodgy public hospital tenders amounting to almost R400 million.
This reportedly took place over the past three years, and while Ramaphosa denies nepotism was what got Maumela the tenders, the DA disputes this.
“The relationship is there. He’s a nephew from President Ramaphosa’s first wife. There is however another connection between Maumela and Bejani Chauke, who is the President’s chief of staff.”
