Why Kermit Erasmus’ last Soweto derby was memorable

Orlando Pirates striker Kermit Erasmus goes into the Soweto derby buoyed by his last appearance in the showdown.

Erasmus recently reunited with Pirates from Mamelodi Sundowns. And as his new club takes on rivals Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday, the high-stakes encounter is nothing new to him.

In fact, Erasmus has a marvellous recollection of events the last time he was involved in the clash.

REKINDLE BEAUTIFUL MEMORIES

He will now hope to rekindle those beautiful memories in winning style as the Buccaneers host their neighbours at FNB.

Interestingly, the last time he featured in the much-awaited clash was almost seven years ago.

“The occasion is special. It’s a privilege and honour to be a part of it now that I’m back home,” he told Pirates’ website.

“Creating the three goals in a 3-1 win brings back fond memories for me. Everybody talks about individual brilliance leading to goals. But for me, the whole team’s performance stands out, along with the atmosphere.

“That’s the memory that people always remind me of when it comes to the Derby. Hopefully, we can bring our supporters a similar joy on the weekend.”

MORALE-BOOSTING

The 33-year-old believes it is essential for them to win the clash to build on the momentum. The Buccaneers are coming from a morale-boosting 3-0 win over Erasmus’ former team Sundowns.

“We gotta build on previous performances and just try to be consistent because with being consistent, there’s a lot of things you can achieve,” said Erasmus.

The former Cape Town City forward said his mission was to bring back the happy days to the Happy People.

“I don’t think anyone has done what I’ve done in a long time. Especially coming back to a Club like Pirates.

“It is a great feeling, and I’m happy to be back, bringing back happy days to the ‘Happy People’. That’s what’s important to me right now.” The derby kicks off at 15:30 on Saturday.
