Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Richard Ofori is relishing being the only PSL representative at next month’s FIFA World Cup. The 2022 edition will be staged in Qatar from 20 November to 18 December 2022.
Ofori is the only DStv Premiership player whose country has qualified for the global soccer showcase.
The former Maritzburg United goalie will be representing Ghana at the World Cup. He has suggested that it would have been beneficial for the PSL if more players were involved.
GOOD FEELING
“It’s a good feeling going to the World Cup. Even though it was not my wish to be the only PSL player going,” Ofori told the media in Durban.
“There are many experienced players in the PSL, and some of them have been to the World Cup before.
“Everyone knows how big the World Cup is in every player’s career. It’s a good thing for every player to have that experience.
“But first thing first, you need to serve your team because that’s where you belong. Serve your team very well so that you can represent your country,” he added.
The 28-year-old shot-stopper has weighed in on their realistic chances of pushing defending champions, Mamelodi Sundowns in the title chase.
“We need to first start challenging ourselves because once we improve ourselves, we can compete at any level.
“So challenging ourselves is what we are doing now. All the teams in the league are competing, and everyone wants to win,” said Ofori.
WINNING WAYS
Ofori was sidelined on Tuesday as Pirates returned to winning ways. They beat Golden Arrows 2-0 at the Princess Magogo Stadium.
The Ghanaian number-one keeper has been the preferred choice between the sticks for the Buccaneers under José Riveiro. He has made 12 appearances in all competitions so far.
The Soweto giants’ next task is the highly anticipated MTN8 second-leg semi-final. They visit Mamelodi Sundowns at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday, 22nd of October.
