Kaizer Chiefs have explained why Itumeleng Khune had to drop out of the starting XI in the last minute.
Khune was replaced by Bruce Bvuma just before kick-off after initially being named in the line-up, while Brandon Petersen was not available due to the birth of his child.
The 35-year-old was set to return to the team after picking up an injury against Stellenbosch FC, but Zwane confirmed Khune felt some pain during the warm-up.
“Itu when he was doing the warm-up, he said he felt some pain on his knee,”
“He thought maybe after seeing the doctors he felt much better and the doctor came to me and said ‘if you’re playing him, you’re taking a huge risk, because when we test him he’s still struggling, still feeling the pain.
“We couldn’t take that risk because we need him for other games going forward.”
Chiefs return to action on the weekend when they will face AmaZulu in the MTN8 semi-final second leg at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
