Former Mamelodi Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana has urged new midfielder Bongani Zungu to create his own Masandawana memories after taking over the prestigious No.8 shirt.
Kekana was wearing the shirt between 2010/11 and 202/21, when he left the club, with Zungu now taking it after joining the club ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.
The 37-year-old won six league titles, two Nedbank Cups, MTN8 and two Telkom Knockout trophies during his stint at Chloorkop. He also captained the side that claimed the holy grail – the CAF Champions League in 2016 and CAF Super Cup the following year.
As a consequence, the weight of fans expecting Zungu to also bring silverware to club is quite heavy, and Kekana insisted his successor in the No.8 shirt must write his own memories.
“For me, I think the jersey belongs to Sundowns. I found the jersey from Teko and somebody was wearing it before Teko,” he said during a Carling Black Label cup event.

“It’s a jersey that one needs to create his own memories and legacy. I’ve got beautiful memories with the jersey to be honest. I’ve won so many trophies wearing the jersey.
“I’m sure Bongani will want to have his own memories, his own legacy, he’ll want to create his beautiful memories.
“I think he’s got a huge responsibility to make sure that he represents the club Mamelodi Sundowns better and I’m sure he’s got all expectations that he deserves because he’s a good player.”
Overall, Kekana featured in 318 matches, scoring 47 goals.
