MaPSL outfit Mamelodi Sundowns, who are already swimming in a pool of cash after winning several money-spinning tournaments, have another opportunity to boost their financial coffers if they win the CAF Super Cup final.
Masandawana, who have already accumulated approximately R142 million in prize money after lifting three major trophies in the 2025-2026 season, could increase that figure to more than R150 million should they overcome Algeria’s USM Alger at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday, November 8.
The Tshwane giants have enjoyed a financially rewarding year, with their success extending from the domestic stage to international competitions.
Their biggest payday came after they were crowned 2025-2026 CAF Champions League winners in May, defeating Morocco’s AS FAR 2-1 on aggregate in the final to collect approximately R99 million in prize money.
But they have recently been dumped out of the 2026-2027 Champions League showdown, fluffing another opportunity to deepen their pockets.
Their 2025-2026 continental triumph secured their place in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup, where they faced Asian champions Al Ahli of Saudi Arabia in the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup.
Sundowns rose to the occasion, recording a memorable 2-1 victory over the Saudi Arabian outfit to lift another international trophy and reportedly pocket approximately R33 million in prize money.
The Brazilians continued their winning ways on the domestic front when they defeated arch-rivals Orlando Pirates 2-0 in the MTN8 final at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on October 10.
Goals from Teboho Mokoena and Iqraam Rayners secured the trophy, together with a reported R10 million winner’s cheque.
The three triumphs have taken Sundowns’ reported prize-money earnings for 2026 to approximately R142 million.
However, the money-making opportunities are far from over for Miguel Cardoso’s charges.
The Brazilians will host USM Alger in the CAF Super Cup on Sunday, with the two sides meeting as winners of the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup respectively.
According to the Confederation of African Football, the winner will receive US$500,000, while the runners-up will pocket US$250,000.
At an indicative exchange rate of R16.53 to the US dollar, the prize money translates to approximately R8.26 million for the winners and R4.13 million for the runners-up.
A victory would therefore take Sundowns’ reported 2026 prize-money earnings from approximately R142 million to R150.26 million.
Even if they finish as runners-up, their earnings would rise to approximately R146.13 million.
For Masandawana, Sunday’s encounter presents an opportunity to add another continental trophy to their collection while strengthening their financial position.
Although their recent Champions League disappointment may have frustrated supporters, the club’s previous successes have demonstrated its ability to turn performances on the pitch into substantial financial rewards.
With another trophy and millions of rands at stake, Sundowns will be determined to ensure that their date with USM Alger ends with more silverware and another handsome payday.
Kick-off is scheduled for 3pm at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.
