Chris Brown has been sentenced over an attack at a London nightclub, but he won’t be going to prison.
The US singer hit a music producer with a tequila bottle in 2023.
Now, a judge has handed him an eight-month custodial sentence.
But the sentence has been suspended for a year.
Brown, 37, was sentenced at Southwark Crown Court in London on Monday, 26 October, after pleading guilty to affray in July.
His co-defendant, Omololu Akinlolu, 40, received a four-month sentence, which was also suspended.
WHY WAS CHRIS BROWN SENTENCED?
The case relates to an attack on music producer Abe Diaw at the Tape nightclub in London’s Mayfair neighbourhood in February 2023.
Diaw needed hospital treatment for injuries to his head and knee.
The court was shown CCTV footage of the incident. Judge Tony Baumgartner said Brown hit Diaw with a tequila bottle, including striking him on the head, and described “the repeated use” of a bottle as “plainly dangerous”.
The judge noted that the attack took place in a “crowded” and “confined” environment, and that the two men pursued Diaw and continued the attack after he tried to move away.
WHY HE WON’T GO TO PRISON
The judge took into account how brief the incident was.
It lasted “no more” than 20 seconds. The violence was “intense”, the judge said, but it wasn’t planned.
Neither man will go to prison, but they were told the sentence should still be considered a “punishment”.
Both men must also pay £1,500 (about R33,000) each towards the prosecution’s costs.
WHY AKINLOLU RECEIVED A LIGHTER SENTENCE
The judge described Akinlolu’s role in the attack as “significant”.
However, he noted that, unlike Brown, Akinlolu neither started the attack nor used a bottle.
Akinlolu is Brown’s friend and vocal coach.
HOW THE CASE UNFOLDED
Brown was arrested in May 2025, when he returned to the UK for the first time since the incident.
He and Akinlolu initially faced more serious charges, including attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm. Both denied the charges, and had been due to stand trial in October.
On 24 July 2026, both men pleaded guilty to affray instead, and prosecutors dropped the more serious charges.
At the time, the Crown Prosecution Service described it as “a vicious and unprovoked attack” in a crowded nightclub.
Affray carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison.
