Sundowns end MTN8 drought as Rayners penalty seals victory over Pirates
Mamelodi Sundowns have ended their long wait for MTN8 glory, and ended Orlando Pirates’ dominance with a 2-0 win in Saturday’s final at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
Teboho Mokoena opened the scoring in the 12th minute, giving Masandawana an early advantage in the highly anticipated showdown.
The midfielder reacted quickest during a goalmouth scramble to put Sundowns ahead after Thabang Matuludi’s clever backheel helped create the opportunity.
Pirates tried to find a way back into the match but struggled to break down Sundowns’ defence.
The Buccaneers had an opportunity to change the complexion of the game when they were awarded a penalty in the second half. However, Sundowns captain Ronwen Williams produced a crucial save against Gamphani Lungu to preserve his team’s lead.
That moment proved decisive as Sundowns continued to protect their advantage against the defending champions.
Iqraam Rayners then put the result beyond doubt by converting a late penalty to make it 2-0 and secure the trophy for Miguel Cardoso’s men.
The victory ends Sundowns’ wait for MTN8 success and denies Pirates a fifth consecutive title in the competition.
