MTN8 Final: Police Arrest Protest Leader Over Threat to Disrupt Moses Mabhida Stadium Match

KwaZulu-Natal police have arrested a protest leader accused of threatening to disrupt the MTN8 final between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

The sold-out match is scheduled to proceed as planned despite concerns over a possible disruption.

The suspect was arrested at King Dinizulu Park in Durban, where he had allegedly gathered a group of people to stage a march to the stadium. He allegedly threatened to block access to the venue to prevent the match from taking place.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the arrest, saying the other people who had gathered with the suspect fled the scene.

“The suspect had gathered a group of people at King Dinizulu Park with the aim of staging a march,” Netshiunda said. “Those who were with him managed to run away.”

Police have also moved to reassure football fans following reports circulating on social media that the final had been cancelled.

Netshiunda said security measures were in place to ensure the safety of spectators and prevent disruptions. Police and Durban Metro Police officers have been deployed to monitor the situation and maintain order around the stadium.

Authorities have warned that anyone threatening public safety or attempting to disrupt the event will face the law.

“Police are reiterating that anyone who threatens to cause instability will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” Netshiunda said.

The suspect’s identity and the charges he may face have not yet been disclosed, as investigations continue.
