A South African mechanic who disappeared while working in northern Mozambique has been freed after weeks in captivity, bringing an end to an ordeal that began in September.

The 30-year-old man, from Phalaborwa in Limpopo, was released unharmed on Sunday, 4 October 2026, according to the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO).

In an official statement issued on Wednesday, 7 October, the department confirmed that he had also left Mozambique following efforts to secure his freedom.

Limpopo Man Disappeared in Northern Mozambique

The mechanic had been working at a camp in the Marrupa district of Mozambique’s Niassa Province when he was captured during the first week of September.

According to Eyewitness News, his disappearance followed an attack by armed militants on a group that included five South Africans.

The attack took place in northern Mozambique, where the man had been employed before his disappearance.

His captivity lasted several weeks, with confirmation of his release only coming in early October.

DIRCO has not publicly identified the mechanic or explained the circumstances surrounding his capture.

Diplomatic Efforts Helped Secure Freedom

South African officials worked with their Mozambican counterparts to secure the man’s release.

In its statement, DIRCO confirmed that the South African High Commission in Maputo had coordinated with several stakeholders to provide consular assistance during the ordeal.

The department credited these efforts with helping secure his freedom.

The South African government also thanked Mozambique for its involvement in bringing the man out of captivity safely.

DIRCO’s confirmation marks a significant development following the mechanic’s disappearance in September.

Questions Remain Over His Captivity

Although the mechanic has been released, several details surrounding the incident remain unanswered.

The department’s statement did not identify those responsible for holding him captive or explain how his release was negotiated.

It also did not disclose whether any arrests had been made in connection with the incident.

What has been confirmed is that the Phalaborwa resident survived the ordeal without injuries and departed Mozambique on 7 October.

His release closes a weeks-long period of captivity, although the circumstances surrounding his disappearance remain unclear.
