Madagascar stands between AmaGlug-Glug and Olympic dream

Posted on October 8, 2026

Madagascar now stands between South Africa’s Under-23 men’s national team and the next step towards their dream of qualifying for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

AmaGlug-Glug will face Madagascar over two legs on November 9 and 17, 2026, with a place in the next round of the CAF U-23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers at stake.

South Africa must win the tie on aggregate to keep their Olympic dream alive.

The two-legged showdown is particularly important because the 2027 CAF U-23 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt will serve as the African qualification tournament for the 2028 Olympics.

However, beating Madagascar will not automatically send South Africa to Los Angeles.

Should AmaGlug-Glug eliminate Madagascar, they will advance to the third and final qualifying round, scheduled for March 22 and 30, 2027.

They will then have to overcome their final qualifying-round opponents to secure a place at the eight-team U-23 AFCON finals in Egypt.

Once at the tournament, the real Olympic battle begins.

The eight participating nations will fight for the coveted African places at the Los Angeles Games, with the top three teams qualifying directly for the 2028 Olympic Games.

The fourth-placed team will have another opportunity through an intercontinental playoff.

For coach Raymond Mdaka, the Madagascar tie therefore represents the first major hurdle on what could become a long road to Los Angeles.

AmaGlug-Glug have already gained valuable preparation from their recent international friendlies against Algeria.

South Africa produced an impressive 3-1 victory over the North Africans before drawing 1-1 in the second encounter, giving Mdaka an opportunity to assess his squad and build combinations ahead of the Olympic qualifying campaign.

The Madagascar matches will now provide the first serious test of whether the young South African side has what it takes to progress through the continental qualification system.

With only three African Olympic places guaranteed at the U-23 AFCON, there will be little room for error.

For AmaGlug-Glug, the message is simple: beat Madagascar, survive the final qualifying round, reach Egypt and then finish among Africa’s top three.

The road to Los Angeles has begun — and Madagascar is the next obstacle.
