New Bafana Midfielder Hailed A ‘Winner’

Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker says Sibongiseni Mthethwa’s call-up to the Bafana Bafana squad is well deserved, adding that the midfielder is the type of player the national team can benefit from.

The ‘Ox’ as Mthethwa is affectionately is one of the several new faces named in Hugo Broos’ squad for the international friendlies against Sierra Leone and Botswana on 24 and 27 September.

“Yea it is well deserved. You know he has worked really hard the last six months of last season as well as this season,” Barker said after his side’s recent 1-1 draw with Sekhukhune United.

“He is just really energetic, breaks down a lot of attacks, covers, presses, makes good recovery runs. He is decent on the ball. He is a fighter, his character – he is a winner. So, he is the type of player I believe Bafana can benefit from.”

Mthethwa joined Barker’s side from Black Leopards last season and the coach says the reason the 27-year-old has fitted in so well at the club, is because of his character and commitment.

“I think he is the type of player to be honest, who will fit in anywhere just because of his character and his commitment to play” Barker added.  “You know he has got a specific role in our team and he carries out that role well. We have also given him confidence.

“He gets a lot more of the ball than he used to and he is showing that he is comfortable on the ball, so he would fit in anywhere in my opinion.”

Stellies go into the international break sitting in 10th position on the DStv Premiership log with 10 points in eight outings.
