Broos Announces Decision On Jali Return To Bafana

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has closed the door on a potential call-up of Andile Jali, despite making a u-turn on his selection of Themba Zwane.

Broos, 70, announced his 23-man squad for the upcoming friendlies against Sierra Leone and Botswana in the September International window, making several changes to his selection.

One of the big talking points of his selection was a first call-up of Mamelodi Sundowns forward Themba Zwane under his reign, with Broos explaining he changed his mind on the 33-year-old.

Zwane’s selection led to questions whether Jali could also potentially return to the national team, but the Belgian tactician closed the door for the 32-year-old.

“If you talk about Andile Jali, I think no,” he said during the squad announcement on SABC1.

When asked to explain his decision, Broos opted to remain silent and not give any further details.

“Yes, but again when I said what I said three quarters now ago, I don’t want to disrespect the nation again,” he added.

Broos also made his intentions clear for the two friendly games against 113-placed Sierra Leone and 146th-placed Botswana, saying he expects two victories after the recent senior national team defeats against Ghana, France and Morocco.

“[I want] two victories, sorry, I want two victories now. The players have to be aware of that,” he explained.

“If we can have two victories, the confidence within in the team will be again there. The confidence of the people will again be there.

“There will be not easy games because it’s ‘only’ Botswana and ‘only’ Sierra Leone but again we have to win two times now and I’ll do everything to have two victories.”
