Marumo Gallants have moved swiftly to fill their vacant coaching position, appointing former Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronny Kananelo as their new head coach.
Kananelo replaces Phuti Mohafe, who recently parted ways with the Limpopo-based Betway Premiership outfit following a difficult start to the 2026/27 campaign.
The club confirmed Kananelo’s appointment in a media statement, describing the former Namibia international as an experienced coach and player with extensive knowledge of football in Southern Africa.
Kananelo enjoyed a successful playing career, most notably with Sundowns, where he won three league titles and several domestic trophies.
He later represented Namibia at international level, earning 53 caps and featuring at the 1998 Africa Cup of Nations.
His coaching career has taken him across Namibia and South Africa, with previous stints at UNAM FC, Black Africa FC, Bucks Buccaneers FC, African Stars FC, Maritzburg United and Bloemfontein Celtic.
Kananelo has also been involved with the Namibia national team technical setup at several major international tournaments, including the 2008, 2019 and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
His most recent assignment was with African Stars FC, whom he guided to the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League.
Gallants believe his experience, tactical knowledge and understanding of Southern African football will help the club turn its fortunes around.
The coach holds a CAF A Licence and is known for a coaching philosophy built around discipline, tactical intelligence and player development.
Kananelo’s immediate task will be to steady a Gallants side that has endured a difficult opening to the Betway Premiership season.
His first major test will come against Orlando Pirates in the club’s upcoming league fixture, where he will be expected to make an immediate impact.
Gallants said Kananelo will remain in charge for the remainder of the 2026/27 season as the club looks to improve its competitiveness and lay the foundations for the future.
The appointment marks another change in the Gallants technical department as the club seeks stability and improved results in the top flight.
