AmaZulu CEO Snenjabulo Zungu says the club’s next ambition is to build its own training village just like Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns have.
Usuthu opened their own store at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, where the club play their home games at, earlier this week. The store will also have a simulator, coffee shop which is next door, lounge, podcast room and media conference room.
But, while they used Kings Park Stadium outer field to train, sharing it with rugby franchise The Sharks, the club’s next ambition is to have their own village where the players will train before their centenary.
“That is our dream,” said Zungu during the store opening.
“We came to this club two years ago and we saw that there’s a miss when it comes to fan engagement and having our village, it is something we want to have.
“We have identified quite a number of things that we thought will have an impact and one of them was to reach out to our supporters.
“Availing the merchandise to our own supporters is important. We realise that throughout the two years there were a lot of concerns about the club’s accessibility when it comes to AmaZulu merchandise. We thought why not open up our own store.”
Since the Zungus took over as Usuthu bosses in October 2020, successes have tumbled.
They finished second on the DStv Premiership table in the 2020/21 season under coach Benni McCarthy, their highest position in the PSL era, qualifying for the CAF Champions League where they reached the group stages, also for the first time.
This season, after 10 points collected in four matches, Brandon Truter’s side matched Clive Barker’s best start of the 1998/99 season at Usuthu. The club also has two huge games coming up in the MTN8 semi-final against Kaizer Chiefs.
In being in the top four of the Wafa Wafa Cup, this is the first time the oldest club in the PSL is in this stage since the 2009/10 season.
