Kruger United’s baptism of fire in the Betway Premiership is showing no signs of getting easier, with the newly promoted Mpumalanga outfit facing another formidable challenge when they host log leaders Orlando Pirates at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday night.
Kick-off is at 7.30pm.
The Village Boys have endured a difficult opening four matches in the top flight, collecting just one point from a possible 12. They have lost three games and drawn one, leaving them rooted to the bottom of the Betway Premiership standings.
Their defeats have come against Kaizer Chiefs, Milford FC and Durban City, while their only point came from a 0-0 draw away to Marumo Gallants.
Kruger began their historic first Premiership campaign with a 3-1 home defeat to Chiefs at Mbombela Stadium on August 1. Khetukuthula Ndlovu restored parity just before halftime after Flavio Silva had put Chiefs ahead, but Wandile Duba’s second-half brace secured all three points for the visitors.
They then travelled to Royal Bafokeng Stadium and earned a valuable point against Marumo Gallants before suffering a narrow 2-1 defeat to Milford FC at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium.
The latest setback came at home against Durban City, who left Mbombela Stadium with a 2-0 victory on August 25.
The numbers paint a worrying picture. Kruger have scored only two goals in their opening four matches while conceding seven, leaving them with a negative goal difference of five. Their lack of goals has been particularly concerning for a side trying to establish itself among South Africa’s elite.
From Championship champions to Premiership strugglers
The contrast between last season and the current campaign could hardly be greater.
Kruger United earned promotion to the Premiership after producing a remarkable 2025/26 Motsepe Foundation Championship campaign. The Mpumalanga club finished at the summit with 62 points from 30 matches, securing the championship title and automatic promotion.
The Village Boys spent much of the season challenging at the top of the table and ultimately finished four points ahead of second-placed Cape Town City. Their promotion represented a major milestone for a club that had never previously played in the country’s top division.
However, life in the Premiership has immediately presented a much different challenge. The pace, quality and depth of the opposition have exposed areas that Kruger were able to overcome in the second tier.
Masutha brought in to add experience
The club had already anticipated the demands of top-flight football by adding veteran coach Joel Masutha to Mongoya’s technical team during the pre-season.
Masutha joined as assistant head coach, bringing considerable Premiership experience from previous spells with clubs including Baroka, Black Leopards, Pretoria Callies and Chippa United.
His arrival has fuelled speculation among some observers that the club could eventually look to him should results continue to deteriorate.
But Mongoya has played down any suggestion that Masutha’s appointment represents a threat to his position.
For the Kruger coach, the veteran’s presence is instead about providing guidance to a young team attempting to find its feet in unfamiliar surroundings.

That relationship could now become increasingly important as Kruger attempt to avoid being cut adrift at the bottom of the table.
Pirates arrive in search of another victory
Standing in their way are Orlando Pirates, who arrive in Mbombela as one of the early pace-setters.
The Buccaneers currently lead the standings with 10 points from four matches after three victories and a draw. Mamelodi Sundowns also have 10 points, meaning Pirates have little room for error if they want to establish an early advantage over the reigning continental champions.
Pirates’ most recent league outing produced a 2-0 victory over Sekhukhune United at Orlando Stadium on August 25, further strengthening their position at the top.
For Kruger, however, the mathematics are much simpler: they desperately need points.
A victory would provide a huge psychological boost and could become the result that kick-starts their Premiership campaign. Another defeat, particularly against the league leaders, would increase the pressure on Mongoya and his players.
Another match tonight
The other Betway Premiership fixture scheduled for Tuesday night is Durban City versus Stellenbosch FC at Chatsworth Stadium, also kicking off at 7.30pm.
Durban City will enter the match with confidence after beating Kruger United 2-0 in their previous league encounter. Stellenbosch, meanwhile, will be looking to improve their position after a mixed opening to the campaign.
The two matches offer contrasting battles: in Mbombela, the league leaders will be attempting to strengthen their position at the summit against the bottom club, while in Chatsworth, Durban City and Stellenbosch will be fighting for valuable points to improve their positions in the increasingly competitive early-season table.
