The Motsepe Foundation Championship started with a few surprises this weekend.
The first round of the newly-named Motsepe Foundation Championship produced just 12 goals with an average of 1.5 per game.
The South African National First Division kicked off on Friday afternoon with newly-promoted sideLa Masia welcoming old campaigners JDR Stars at Wits stadium. La Masia opened the season with 2-0 over the Hammerboyz. Meanwhile, newly named All Stars FC visited Platinum City Rovers at Olen Park and ‘Umlilo’ came away with a 1-0 victory.
Saturday didn’t disappoint when it comes to goals, as the Urban Warriors shared the spoils with the Romans in a 1-1 at Lucas Moripe Stadium.
Meanwhile, Magesi FC showed Venda Football Academy flames as they took all maximum points with a 1-0 win. Black Leopards played at their new home ground Malamlele Stadium and it was packed to the ceiling but they went down 1-0 to Hungry Lions.
The last day of first round was completed on Sunday afternoon, when Baroka FC went down to the Cane Cutters by 2-1. Casric FC welcomed Limpopo-based side Tshakuma Tsha Madzivhandila and the encounter produced two goals in favour of newly named Casric. Last season’s play-offs candidates AmaTuks shared the spoils with Polokwane City in a goalless draw.
