Sundowns Coach Reacts To Best-Ever 100 Game Milestone

Manqoba Mngqithi says his record alongside co-head coach Rulani Mokwena as the best ever record after 100 games for Mamelodi Sundowns is a reflection of an exceptional group.

After beating SuperSport United 2-0 in their Tshwane Derby to advance to the MTN8 semi-final, where they will face Orlando Pirates, the coaching duo secured their 63rd win, per OptaJabu.

That marks five more than Ted Dimitru and eight more than three-time CAF Champions League winning coach Pitso Mosimane over the same number of games in charge which comes with fewer draws, defeats, less goals conceded and more scored.

While the statistics speak volumes of the success of last season’s domestic treble winners, the former assistant coach to Mosimane believes it’s an indictment of the incredible teamwork and strength in all departments at Masadawana at present.

“We have to appreciate such outcomes but the truth is we’ve never really focused on how many matches we have played now, we’re always worried about the next match, the next match, the next match,” he said at Chloorkop on Wednesday afternoon.

“It’s never really something for us as coaches to count how many matches we’ve played now and how many we’ve won, because you can win the wrong ones that do not make you win trophies – but have a very good number of wins.

“You can get to a final and lose and then win four matches after that, get to the next final and lose. So for us, it’s not the most important thing but when it’s there we must appreciate and understand, results are a reflection of the group, not the coaches.”

He continued: “It’s a reflection of the whole group which a bunch of players that we have, the technical team that we have, the support staff that we have, the management that we have, the leadership from the board, the Chairman and the President of the club.

“It’s not about individuals, we really never take it to heart and think we’re special. We appreciate being part of the group.”
