Motsepe Foundation Championship Set To Kick Off

South Africa’s National First Division will make a return this coming weekend under the new name of Motsepe Foundation Championship.

In the beginning of July, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) announced the Motsepe Foundation had taken over as new sponsor of the second division after GladAfrica didn’t renew their contract.

There are sixteen teams in the division, including newly promoted sides MM Platinum La Masia and Magesi FC. Meanwhile, there are teams that also sold their franchise such as Free State Stars, who are now known as Casric FC.

Baroka FC is also part of the new teams in the league after getting relegated from DStv Premiership last season. Another familiar side with a new name and new home are All Stars FC, who were previously known as Cape Town All Stars.

Bakgakga start the 2022/23 campaign as the favorites to gain automatic promotion, with the likes of the University Of Pretoria, JDR Stars also seen as the giants of the division.

Experienced teams Black Leopards and Cape Town Spurs are also expected to fight for promotion after beefing up their squads during the off season.

The league kicks off on Friday afternoon when the ‘Hammerboyz’ pay a visit to ‘Omakoti’ MM Platinum/La Masia. At the same time, Platinum City Rovers will welcome All Stars FC.
