Motsepe Foundation Championship side Platinum City Rovers have secured the services of goalkeeper Thabiso Zulu and defender Nkululeko Cele for the upcoming season.

The duo joins City Rovers from Eastern Cape ABC Motsepe League outfit Bizana Pondo Chiefs.

Pondo Chiefs completed the last campaign in the third position in Stream A of their provincial ABC League with 27 after 16 games, while the North West club managed to finish in the 10th position with 38 points after 30 games.

This was City Rovers’ first season in the South African football second-tier. “The club would like to thank both players for their selfless contribution to the team, wishing them all the best in their future endeavours,” read the Bizana-based side’s statement.

The Motsepe Foundation League is expected to start on Friday, 2 September, until Saturday, 14 May 2022.

City Rovers will play their first game on Friday against All Stars at Olen Park Stadium, with the kick-off set for 15:00.

Last month, this publication reported that Turfloop Sports Club Limited has reached an amicable agreement to purchase 50% equity of City Rovers ahead of the campaign.

As things stand, the name change of the club is still subject to ratification by the PSL, as the deal is an amalgamation between the two entities, not a take-over, but makes the board and management of Turfloop Sports Club Limited a part of the new club’s decision making processes.

However, the status quo remains until all PSL processes have been satisfied. Once approved, the club will relocate to Germiston Stadium and play its home games between Cape Town and Lephalale in the Limpopo Province.

This deal will be a holistic multi-sports development entity that will develop and harness a plethora of sporting codes.
