Mamelodi Sundowns have officially parted ways with striker Pavol Safranko, the club announced on Thursday morning.
Šafranko, 27, arrived with high expectations after his €700,000 (R12-million) transfer from Romanian side Sepsi OSK but has not been afforded regular first-team opportunities due to the form of PSL Footballer of the Year, Peter Shalulile.
The Slovakia international scored nine goals in 29 games, 12 of which were starts which boosted a credible return but it’s believed the technical team feels Abubeker Nassir brings another dimension to the squad while Šafranko has not suited their desired playing style.
As reported by iDiski Times 10 days ago, Downs have now confirmed that have parted ways with the 27-year-old striker, who was taking up one of the club’s foreign spots.
“Mamelodi Sundowns can confirm that it has parted ways with Slovakian striker, Pavol Šafranko,” the club stated.
“The 27 year-old lanky striker joined Sundowns last season from Romanian Liga 1 side Sepsi OSK and made a total of 29 appearances and scored 9 goals for Masandwana.
“One of the key goals that Pavol scored was the winner against Royal AM to ensure that Sundowns progressed to the final of the Nedbank Cup. Pavol, who has been a consummate professional throughout his stay at Sundowns is free to join the club of his choice and the Sundowns family wishes him all of the best with his footballing endeavours.”
After Wednesday’s 3-0 win over Stellenbosch FC, co-coach Rulani Mokwena had already hinted at Safranko’s exit.
“The club will also make an announcement on that but it is looking like there will be some movement on that space,” he explained.
“But because the delicacy of that situation and also because Pavol is such an incredible human being, it’s better to do it in a way that his personality would deserve the professionalism that he deserves.
“The club will treat him just like he treated the club, which is with respect, dignity and I think it would be unfair of me to comment on that in this platform before the club addresses it.”
