Hunt Explains Surprise Parker Decision

SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt has opened up on Bernard Parker signing for TS Galaxy despite his desire to secure the former Kaizer Chiefs captain.

Parker was released by Chiefs in the off-season after 11 years of service and was later invited to train by his former Amakhosi manager at SuperSport upon his return to the club.

Despite his advancing age at 36, Parker had been lauded as a model professional who’s capable of still starring in the DStv Premiership and back in July Hunt admitted he’s impressed him

“Besides the quality as a player, he’s fantastic. He’s shown in the last two or three days in training that he’s still got it. I think in that position we need somebody but obviously, nothing has been signed or sealed yet,” he said at the launch of the 2022/23 campaign.

However, in a surprising turn of events, Galaxy announced his signing on a two-year deal and Chairman Tim Sukazi admitted he will likely be roped into the club after his career in a different capacity.

“It was discussed at board level you know and the decision was, they didn’t feel it was, you know, the [right] decision to sign the player, that’s it,” Hunt said when asked about his Galaxy switch.

The three-time league winner also went on to discuss the pressure he’s come under early on in his second stint as they remain winless after four games and have Mamelodi Sundowns next in back-to-back fixtures in the MTN8 and league.

“I think it’s the right club, they explained to me what the project was. They explained to me what we want to try to achieve and I thought ya… I mean I’m up for it,” he said.

“I know what we’re competing against is very difficult because of what… there are two or three clubs who’ve signed very well. It’s difficult to [now sign] of what is out there now in terms of value, so it’s very difficult.

“But I knew the project and there are a few kids we need to groom and that will take a little bit of time, but do you always have time in football? You don’t really have much time.”
