Cape Town Roads Reopen After Protest Disruptions

Major roads around Cape Town’s N2 and R300 interchange have reopened after service-delivery protests caused widespread traffic disruption on Friday morning.

News24 reported that the affected routes were reopened after protesters were cleared from the area. The earlier protest action had forced motorists to avoid parts of the N2 and R300 during the morning peak.

Cape Town Freeway Management System had earlier confirmed that the N2 was closed in both directions at the R300 because of protest action.

Roads reopen after morning closures

The disruption affected several key sections of Cape Town’s freeway network.

Earlier reports said the N2 inbound was closed near Spine Road, while the outbound carriageway was affected near Borcherds Quarry.

The R300 was also disrupted, with closures reported near the N2 interchange and Hindle Road.

News24 later reported that the major affected roads had reopened after the service-delivery protest action subsided.

Protest caused major traffic delays

The closures affected one of the city’s busiest commuter corridors, with motorists forced onto alternative routes during the morning rush.

The N2 and R300 carry large volumes of traffic between different parts of the metro, including routes towards Cape Town International Airport and surrounding suburbs.

The City of Cape Town says its Metro Police and Highway Patrol Unit patrol major roads, including the N2 and R300, around the clock. These teams respond to accidents, breakdowns and roadway obstructions such as protest action.

Traffic expected to ease

With the affected roads reopened, traffic conditions are expected to improve as congestion clears from surrounding routes.

Drivers may still experience delays while traffic volumes return to normal after the earlier closures.

The City’s freeway enforcement network is supported by patrol teams and the Freeway Management System, which monitors key routes across Cape Town.

Motorists are advised to continue checking verified traffic updates before travelling through areas that were affected by the protest action.
