The wait is finally over for South African football supporters as the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season kicks off this afternoon, with defending champions Orlando Pirates beginning the defence of their league crown against newly promoted Milford FC at Orlando Stadium. Kick-off is at 3pm.
After ending their 14-year wait for the league title last season, the Buccaneers will be eager to start their campaign on a winning note in front of their home supporters. Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou will also be looking to send an early statement that Pirates are determined to retain the championship despite the fierce competition expected from their rivals this season.
Newly promoted Milford FC, meanwhile, will be aiming to spoil the champions’ party by making a memorable top-flight debut. Having earned promotion through an impressive campaign, Milford will be hoping to prove they belong among South Africa’s elite clubs.
The opening weekend promises plenty of excitement, with several intriguing fixtures scheduled across Saturday and Sunday. Kaizer Chiefs begin a new chapter under coach Fernando da Cruz with a difficult away fixture against fellow newcomers Kruger United, while Sekhukhune United welcome Durban City in Polokwane. Stellenbosch FC host AmaZulu, and Golden Arrows take on Chippa United.
On Sunday, Polokwane City travel to Richards Bay, while Siwelele FC entertain TS Galaxy as the first round of fixtures concludes.
One of the biggest talking points ahead of the new season has been the postponement of Mamelodi Sundowns’ opening fixture against Marumo Gallants.
The Premier Soccer League granted Sundowns’ request to postpone the match due to exceptional circumstances following the tragic passing of midfielder Jayden Adams, which disrupted the club’s preparations. The fixture will now be played at a later date.
