Orlando Pirates have suffered just one defeat in 17 matches across all competitions this season, underlining their growing status as serious contenders for silverware.
Their 2-1 victory over Kaizer Chiefs in this past weekend’s Soweto Derby was another statement of intent and a warning to the other 15 teams in the Betway Premiership.
Under Abdeslam Ouaddou, the Buccaneers have developed into a difficult team to beat. Their defensive organisation has been impressive, while the creativity in midfield has provided a steady supply of opportunities for their forwards.
With the Betway Premiership and CAF Champions League firmly in their sights, Pirates will be aiming for another successful campaign. Although they enjoyed a treble-winning season last term, Ouaddou’s biggest ambition will undoubtedly be to guide the club to continental glory.
Orlando Pirates are the team to watch
Given the quality within their squad, Bucs supporters have every reason to believe their team can go all the way to the Champions League final and secure a second star.
New signings such as Thapelo Mokobodi, Simphiwe Masilela and Ghampani Lungu have already made positive impressions in Pirates colours.
In attack, Tshepang Moremi has been in excellent form, while Oswin Appollis has struggled to reach his best level this campaign.
Lebone Seema has also been impressive at the back and has contributed with goals on a few occasions for Orlando Pirates. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Sipho Chaine continues to provide reliability between the posts, further highlighting the balance throughout the Pirates squad.
Although their strikers have not always been clinical in front of goal, the Buccaneers have found alternative sources of goals. Their forwards combine well with the midfielders and wingers, creating opportunities and ensuring that the team remains a threat from different areas of the pitch.
With strength across almost every department, Pirates are increasingly looking like a team capable of challenging on both the domestic and continental fronts.
