Kaizer Chiefs head coach Arthur Zwane has revealed that Victor Gomes told him he made a mistake by booking Zitha Kwinika against Mamelodi Sundowns.
Kwinika received a yellow card in Chiefs’ 4-0 defeat to Sundowns on the weekend, with many believing it was a case of mistaken identify by match official Victor Gomes, who had pointed at the penalty spot for a foul from Siyabonga Ngezana on Victor Shalulile and then straight to Kwinika to book him.
While there have been debates over Kwinika’s booking, Zwane now explained that Gomes admitted a mistake to him.
“At half-time, the referee on the day, Mr Gomes he came to me and he said ‘look, I made a mistake. I made a mistake.’ It’s human error like any other one,” he said on Thursday.
“Any other human being, you can make a mistake at any given time and that’s what he said to me. ‘I cautioned a wrong player’, that’s what he said.
“I said ‘no, it’s fine. As the match official we do understand, let’s carry on’. As coaches and players we also make mistakes and everyone makes mistakes.
“That’s what I just wanted to clarify. When Zitha was cautioned, he [Zitha] said nothing. We don’t have to challenge it. It as a mistake and we move on.
We don’t want to dwell on it, we don’t even want to focus on it. We’re ok. We understand, we move on.
“Because is the one who came to me, he came to me at half-time on our way to the field, he said ‘coach, I made a mistake, it was a human error’.”
When asked about the comments by SAFA Head of Refereeing, Abdul Ebrahim who had told iDiski Times that Kwinika was cautioned for dissent, Zwane said they want to move on.
“Zitha said nothing,” he reiterated.
“We also had to go through it and make sure. It’s just unfortunate, it’s not a big thing. We don’t want to blow it out of proportion. We move on.”
