France and Morocco renew rivalry with a FIFA World Cup semi-final place at stake

Morocco will once again carry Africa’s hopes when they take on France in a blockbuster 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-final in Boston on Thursday night. The match is a repeat of the 2022 World Cup semi-final, where France ended Morocco’s historic run, but the Atlas Lions now believe they have the quality and experience to write a different ending.

France head into the encounter as one of the tournament favourites after producing a series of commanding performances, while Morocco have once again proved why they are among the world’s most dangerous knockout teams with their disciplined defending and devastating counter-attacking football.
Morocco’s road to the quarter-finals

The Atlas Lions enjoyed an impressive group-stage campaign in Group C, finishing behind Brazil after collecting five points.
They opened with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Brazil before edging Scotland 1-0 in their second match. Morocco then completed their group campaign with an entertaining 4-2 victory over Haiti, sealing qualification for the Round of 32.

In the Round of 32, Morocco faced a stern examination against the Netherlands. After a tense 1-1 draw, the North Africans held their nerve to win the penalty shoot-out 3-2 and book their place in the last 16.
They were even more convincing against co-hosts Canada, weathering early pressure before producing a clinical second-half display to secure a comfortable 3-0 victory and become Africa’s lone surviving representative in the tournament.

Several players have been instrumental in Morocco’s remarkable campaign.
Captain Achraf Hakimi has led from the front with energetic runs from right-back, while goalkeeper Yassine Bounou has once again produced crucial saves in big moments. Midfielder Azzedine Ounahi has dictated play in midfield, and Soufiane Rahimi has stepped up in attack, especially after injuries disrupted Morocco’s forward line. The creativity of Brahim Diaz and the defensive excellence of Noussair Mazraoui have also been key to Morocco’s success.

France’s impressive campaign

France have looked every inch genuine title contenders throughout the competition.
Les Bleus topped Group I with maximum points after defeating Senegal 3-1, overcoming Iraq and then beating Norway to finish the group stage unbeaten with a perfect record.

Their knockout journey has been equally impressive.
France comfortably dispatched Sweden 3-0 in the Round of 32 before grinding out a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Paraguay in the Round of 16, with Kylian Mbappé converting the decisive penalty to send Didier Deschamps’ side into the quarter-finals.

The French attack has been spearheaded by Kylian Mbappé, who has enjoyed another outstanding tournament and is among the competition’s leading scorers. He has received excellent support from Ousmane Dembélé, Michael Olise, Bradley Barcola and the exciting Désiré Doué, while goalkeeper Mike Maignan and central defenders William Saliba and Dayot Upamecano have ensured France remain equally solid at the back.

What to expect

Thursday night’s encounter in Boston, kickoff at 10pm, promises to be one of the most fascinating matches of the tournament.
France possess arguably the strongest attacking unit remaining in the competition and will dominate possession, but Morocco have repeatedly shown they are comfortable defending deep before launching lightning-fast counter-attacks.

The battle between Mbappé and Morocco’s experienced defence, marshalled by Hakimi, Mazraoui and Bounou, could decide the outcome, while Morocco will hope Diaz, Rahimi and Ounahi can exploit any spaces left by the French.

With a place in the semi-finals at stake and memories of the dramatic 2022 meeting still fresh, another fiercely contested contest is expected. France may begin as favourites because of their superior squad depth and attacking firepower, but Morocco have already demonstrated that they are capable of upsetting the world’s biggest football nations and keeping Africa’s dream alive.
