pain broke Portugal hearts as late strike ends Ronaldo’s World Cup dream

Spain left it until stoppage time to snatch a dramatic 1-0 victory over Portugal in a tense FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Monday night, sending their Iberian rivals crashing out of the tournament and bringing Cristiano Ronaldo’s illustrious World Cup career to a heartbreaking end.

For 90 minutes, the two European giants cancelled each other out in a tactical battle filled with discipline, missed opportunities and growing frustration. Just as extra time appeared inevitable, Spain struck the decisive blow in the first minute of added time.

Midfielder Mikel Merino latched onto a brilliantly worked quick free-kick, racing through before calmly slotting a low finish beyond Diogo Costa in the 90+1st minute to spark wild Spanish celebrations and silence the Portuguese supporters.

The victory books Spain’s place in the quarter-finals, where they will face the winner of the United States and Belgium.

Portugal started brightly and created the better openings in the opening half.

Pedro Neto delivered an inviting cross in the 37th minute that João Félix headed back across goal. Ronaldo reacted instinctively with an improvised effort, but Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón was well positioned to make the save.

Moments later Portugal came within inches of taking the lead when a deflected effort struck the crossbar, leaving the Spanish defence scrambling. Despite their positive approach, Portugal could not find the breakthrough before halftime.

Spain gradually took control after the interval but also struggled to convert possession into clear-cut chances.

Lamine Yamal repeatedly threatened down the right flank, while Dani Olmo and Ferran Torres searched for openings against Portugal’s well-organised defence. Portugal remained dangerous on the counter-attack, but Ronaldo often found himself isolated as Spain’s defenders kept the veteran striker under tight control.

Frustration grew on both benches as attacks repeatedly broke down. Portugal’s Bruno Fernandes wasted a dangerous free-kick early in the second half, while Ronaldo was left visibly irritated after several promising moves failed to reach him inside the penalty area. Spain also found chances hard to come by as Portugal defended resolutely and looked set to force extra time.

However, heartbreak arrived in stoppage time.

Rodri quickly restarted play from a free-kick deep inside Portugal’s half, catching the Portuguese defence completely off guard. Ferran Torres slipped an intelligent through ball into the path of Merino, who kept his composure to drill a low shot into the bottom corner for the only goal of the match.

Portugal threw everything forward in the remaining minutes, but Spain comfortably saw out the closing stages to secure a hard-fought victory.

The defeat also marked the end of an extraordinary World Cup journey for 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo, who had confirmed before the match that the 2026 tournament would be his final appearance on football’s biggest stage. The Portuguese captain, playing in his sixth World Cup, cut a dejected figure after the final whistle as his dream of lifting the famous trophy slipped away once again.

Despite another tireless performance and several moments of quality, Ronaldo was unable to inspire Portugal to victory. His teammates surrounded him at the final whistle as the legendary forward walked off the pitch, knowing his remarkable World Cup career had ended in disappointment.

Spain, meanwhile, march on with renewed belief that they can challenge for another world title after surviving one of the tournament’s toughest knockout encounters.
