Barker’s Defender Dilemma Ahead Of Pirates

Published

on

Stellenbosch head coach Steve Barker is in a race for time to have central defenders for Wednesday’s DStv Premiership game against Orlando Pirates.

Stellies played to a goalless draw away against Marumo Gallants on Saturday, and during the game, Bafana Bafana defender Athenkosi Mcaba was stretchered off injured.

They are still waiting on the work permit for new German defender Lasse Sobiech, and so as things stand their only centre-back available is captain Rafiq De Goede.

When asked by iDiski Times journalist Lethabo Kganyago about Mcaba’s injury, Barker was a little concerned as it looked like a hamstring strain.

He also confirmed that new signing Vusi Sibiya is also injured, while young Liam De Kock is heading on loan to Venda Football Academy.

“No, I haven’t had time, It looked like a hamstring strain so it’s a bit unfortunate,” Barker said.

“Vusi Sibiya, our other centre back is also injured. And Lasse Sobiech, the German defender hasn’t got his work permit.

“So from having five central defenders we now only have one because Liam De Kock is also going out on loan to Venda Football Academy. So ja, let’s hope his work permit comes through by Wednesday. “
