Full list of free agents signed by Kaizer Chiefs in the past 12 months

Kaizer Chiefs’ growing reliance on free agents in recent seasons has become a talking point among supporters, with many questioning the club’s transfer strategy.

Last season, the Soweto giants signed seven free agents as part of their squad rebuild before going on to finish third in the Betway Premiership.

Ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, Amakhosi have already secured the signature of defender Thabo Moloisane on a free transfer, prompting speculation that the club will continue targeting players available without transfer fees.

Among last season’s free-agent arrivals were Ethan Chislett, Thabiso Monyane, Paseka Mako, Lebohang Maboe, Asanele Velebayi, Luke Baartman and Etiosa Ighodaro.

Of those signings, Monyane and Maboe established themselves as regular starters for Kaizer Chiefs, while Velebayi and Chislett showed encouraging signs. The remaining additions struggled to make a significant impact.

With experienced players such as Tshegofatso Mabasa, Percy Tau and Peter Shalulile currently available as free agents, it remains to be seen whether Amakhosi will move for any of them during the current transfer window.

Kaizer Chiefs’ new head coach Fernando Da Cruz has yet to make his first signing since taking charge, with the team having only just begun pre-season preparations.

The club has already confirmed the departures of George Matlou and Happy Mashiane, while further exits are expected as Da Cruz evaluates his squad ahead of the new season.

Although the Frenchman’s exact objectives have not been publicly outlined, expectations will be high. A strong league campaign, a competitive run in the CAF Confederation Cup and silverware are likely to be the minimum targets at a club of Chiefs’ stature.

Kaizer Chiefs might n bring free agents this transfer window

As the transfer window progresses, Chiefs are expected to remain active in the free-agent market, with players released by rivals Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates likely to feature among their potential targets.

Can Amakhosi challenge for the league?
