Andile Lungisa Takes Mbalula To Court After His Name Was Removed From ANC Candidate List For Nelson Mandela Bay

ANC NEC member Andile Lungisa has taken Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula and the ANC to the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg, challenging his removal from the party’s candidate list for the 4 November local government elections.

Lungisa, who was shortlisted as one of the ANC’s possible mayoral candidates for Nelson Mandela Bay, claims his name was removed from the proportional representation list after the list had already been endorsed through the party’s internal processes.

He is seeking an order declaring his removal unlawful and wants his name reinstated on the ANC list. His legal team argues that the ANC’s rules require serious grounds and the necessary NEC approval before an endorsed list can be changed.

Mbalula has said he will respond to the matter in court, while arguing that Lungisa should have used the ANC’s internal processes to resolve the dispute.

The legal challenge comes amid wider controversy over the ANC’s candidate lists after the party missed the IEC’s deadline in six municipalities. The IEC has rejected claims that a technical glitch prevented the lists from being submitted.
