A Grassy Park newborn baby girl was found dead in a bin at a petrol station on Wednesday morning, police have confirmed through a Daily Voice report.

The discovery was made at a site on the corner of Prince George Drive and 4th Avenue. Grassy Park police have opened an inquest docket and appealed to the public for information.

Police Open Inquest After Grassy Park Newborn Discovery

According to Daily Voice, provincial police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said officers were called to the petrol station after a complaint about a baby found at the premises.

Police arrived at about 08:30 on 24 June 2026. They were then shown the body of a newborn baby girl inside a black dirt bin at the station.

“The circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation,” Van Wyk told Daily Voice.

Grassy Park police have opened an inquest docket. At this stage, no further details have been confirmed about how the baby died or how long the body had been in the bin.

Cape Flats Community Shaken by Second Body Discovery

The Grassy Park newborn case comes after another body was found on the Cape Flats a day earlier. Daily Voice reported that the decomposed body of an unidentified woman was found in a black refuse bag in Kewtown, Athlone, on Tuesday, 23 June 2026.

Police spokesperson Thembakazi Mpendukana said Athlone police discovered the body at about 10:00 in Cross Boulevard Street, Kewtown. An inquest docket was opened, and a post-mortem will determine the cause of death.

Community activist Aqeelah Abrahams told Daily Voice that residents were shocked after a smell reportedly led them to the discovery.

Police Appeal for Information

Police have asked anyone with information about the Grassy Park newborn to come forward. Members of the public can contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS app to send tip-offs anonymously.

The South African Government says crime can also be reported at the nearest police station. It says anonymous crime reports can be made through Crime Stop, while emergencies should be reported on 10111.
