Matlou axed! Chiefs begin major squad clear-out as Da Cruz era gets underway

The winds of change are already blowing at Kaizer Chiefs, and George Matlou has become the first casualty of what is expected to be a major squad overhaul under new coach Fernando Da Cruz.

Amakhosi officially confirmed on Tuesday that the attacking midfielder will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of June 2026, bringing an end to his four-year stay at Naturena.

The announcement comes as Da Cruz begins reshaping the squad ahead of a crucial season in which Chiefs will be expected to challenge for honours and compete in the CAF Confederation Cup.

In a statement, the club thanked Matlou for his service and contribution.

“After four seasons with Kaizer Chiefs, George Matlou’s contract will not be renewed when it expires at the end of June 2026,” the club said.

The 27-year-old joined Chiefs from Swallows FC in July 2022 and was part of the squad that lifted the Nedbank Cup during the 2024/25 season.

However, with a new coach at the helm and expectations rising, it appears Da Cruz is wasting no time in making tough decisions as he looks to build a squad capable of returning Chiefs to the top of South African football.

Sources suggest Matlou may only be the first of several departures, with more players facing uncertain futures as the French tactician conducts a full assessment of his squad.

The big question now is: Who will be next to feel the axe as Da Cruz’s rebuilding project gathers momentum?
